SPOT is the only device of its kind, using the GPS satellite network to acquire its coordinates, and then sending its location – with a link to Google Maps™ – and a pre-programmed message via a commercial satellite network. And unlike Personal Locator Beacons, SPOT does more than just call for help. Tracking your progress, checking in with loved ones, and non-emergency assistance are also available, all at the push of a button. And because it uses 100% satellite technology, SPOT works around the world – even where cell phones don't. Messaging Modes

There are 3 modes of messaging:

1. "OK" - The OK button is used to send an "all is well" message to friends and family. SPOT sends three identical messages to the SPOT service for redundancy. The first of those three messages is delivered.

2. "Help" - The help button is designed to be used in non-life threatening situations. The people on your contact list are notified of your position and request for assistance. SPOT sends one message every 5 minutes for one hour or until Help is cancelled

3. "911" - When the 911 button is pressed, a message is sent to the GEOS International Emergency Response Center. The proper authorities are then dispatched to your location. Each message contains 2 things:

1. GPS coordinates (+/- 5 feet)
2. A link to Google maps

SPOT sends messages via satellites to e-mail addresses and/or cell phones. You can set up a friends and family contact list with up to five emails and five cellphone contacts for an SMS text message using the "Help" or "OK" function. The contact list and 115-character message can be changed via the website at any time.

Even if SPOT cannot acquire its location from the GPS network it will still attempt to send a distress signal – without exact location – to the Emergency Response Center, which will still notify your contacts of the signal and continue to monitor the network for further messages. Similarly, it will still attempt to send a HELP message – without exact location – to your contacts.

There is also an optional tracking feature. Every 10 minutes for 24 hours, your position is plotted. With your permission, anyone with an Internet connection can monitor your progress via the Spot Website using Google Maps™. The tracking feature is also an excellent personal trip log that is a great compliment to photos or journal entries. By selecting the desired "Track" messages in your account log and clicking "Show On Map," your entire route can be displayed through Google Maps™. Additional subscription fees apply for this function.

Web Based SPOT Personalization

1. After purchasing the device, the user logs onto the website and registers his unit and purchases a subscription.

2. The friends and family contact list is entered. Up to five emails and five cellphone contacts per "Help" or "OK" function.

3. The user can customize the messages for both the "Help" and "OK" notification. The 115-character message can be changed via the website at any time.
